It was hard to follow Paul Grannis' letter of Aug. 15. Was he praising Sheriff Curtis Hill for supporting Proposition 6 - "Police and Law Enforcement Funding" - that is intended to combat gangs and illegal aliens or was he criticizing Sheriff Hill and District Attorney Candice Hooper for "writ(ing) their own policy"? The de facto sanctuary policy in San Benito County and Hollister is not new. It has been in existence for decades. It should be common knowledge to our elected officials.
Grannis was correct for recommending enforcement of existing immigration laws. Passage of Proposition 6 may start the process of ending the sanctuary status in San Benito County.

FDA is not to trust, needs overhaul
Dear Editor,
The F.D.A. and the E.P.A. say that concerns about the controversial chemical, BPA found in can linings, baby bottles and various household items, is not a health hazard when used in food containers. They say that small amounts of bisphenol that migrate from food containers into the food they contain are not dangerous to babies or adults. They also report that current levels of exposure are not harmful.
They are accepting the findings from two studies funded by industry!
More than 100 government scientists and university laboratory studies have found that there are health concerns associated with BPA. Some of these studies have linked BPA to diabetes, breast and prostate cancer, behavioral health and reproductive problems in lab animals.
BPA has been found present in the urine of 93 percent of the population!
International superstores Walmart and our neighbors to the north Canada will be banning BPA in baby products!
The F.D.A. is the same federal government agency that kept the U.S.A. on hold from buying and consuming spinach and tomatoes and, some years ago, strawberries, costing the agricultural community millions of dollars due to FDA's poor and inadequate monitoring and inspection of the food source to the table (as they do in much of Europe). They are also slow in requiring labeling to show where produce is grown.
Are we to trust the F.D.A. and industry or the scientific community for our health concerns? The F.D.A. needs an overhaul with increased inspectors and food scientists for the benefit of our future health and safety.
