Letters: Tea Party afterthoughts; recalling a legacy
    Apr 28, 2009

    Most Californians not extremist

    Dear Editor,

The United States Department of Homeland Security says Tea Party protesters are potential dangerous extremists, along with veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan and the majority of Californians that supported Proposition 8.

I must have several hits on the Homeland Security Subversives List. I attended the Hollister Tea Party (that is 1), I believe in God (that is 2), I favor traditional marriage between one man and one woman (that is 3), I prefer individual liberty over government directives, (that is 4), and I still own the .22 rifle I had when I was 10 years old, (TILT).

CNN says I am anti-government because I attended a Tea Party. Janeana Garofalo says I am a red-neck racist.

I can handle their name calling. I wish they could handle my freedom of speech.

    Marvin L. Jones, Hollister

    Remembering a great man

    Dear Editor,

Recently we have had the honor to attend the service and funeral of the great Monsignor Thomas Morgan who passed away at the age of 99. It would have been nice to see him celebrate his 100 the birthday (God's plans). We attended his 2007 and 2008 birthdays and on those I wrote two letters on his behalf where I mentioned that I was writing those letters to let Monsignor know in life how much we love and appreciate what he has done for us. We have a good family relationship with him. In his service and funeral many people spoke on his behalf. The stories of one or the other ending up with the same opinion of how great he had been in life, how great of a priest he was, great friend, great joker, and how much he had done in his almost seventy years of being a priest. All this with no scandals.

On his service, Sunday night, they had his coffin open; I walked up to say one more goodbye. He looked great smooth no wrinkles. A symbol of a saint full of peace. I put my hand on top of his hand and said "God bless you". Which are Thomas Morgan's words that he always used when he visited or departed. I pray to God that he finds what always tried to preach to us. Getting into heaven is not an easy task but in this case God will have a place for him if not lookout because none of us will have a chance. On Monday, for his mass of resurrection we had the honor of having two bishops present.

Most Reverend Garcia bishop of Monterey Diocese and the most retired Bishop Sylvester who participated in the mass and another twelve priest from around. Father Rudy did a great job organizing the whole thing. I enjoyed the enthusiasm of so many people who wept in tears.

Father Morgan was our priest for 13 years and he baptized all my grandchildren. Our house was his house. Even after he moved to town he always depended on my wife for sewing needs. Also he loved Portuguese sweet bread sometimes we gave it to him and sometimes he would ask when he was going to get some. He knew Mary so well that he was not shy to ask. Sometimes she would cook it just to make him happy. I have my doubts when he got sweet bread that he would not share it with anyone.

We pray that you find a place in the company of God. You deserve it. I don't see anyone more qualified. Now that you are in heaven pray for us and God bless. This is only my opinion.

    Amadeu Lima, Hollister
